A road has been closed in both directions after a possible unexploded World War Two bomb was discovered.

Humberside Police have said they had closed Thirtleby at its junctions with Coniston Lane and the A165, near Ganstead, east of Hull around 4pm this afternoon.

It comes after a possible unexploded bomb, believed to be from World War Two, may have been discovered during ditch clearing along the side of the road. Police have said a bomb disposal is on route, with the road likely to remain closed “for some time”.

PCSO Darren Bainton said the ordnance was intact and being treated as a live explosive.

He tweeted: “Currently dealing with an unusual find on Thirtleby Lane Coniston, carriageway has been closed until further notice.”

A force spokesman said: “It looks like some World War Two ordnance has been found. We will get it checked out and we don’t want anybody getting too close to it.”

Police teams from Bridlington, Hornsea and Driffield later confirmed the object was a 28lb practice bomb.
