Brimstone were recently contracted to carry out a magnetometer survey on a site in west Kent. Analysis of the gathered data identified a number of magnetic anomalies that modelled as potential unexploded ordnance (UXO).

As such, Brimstone recommended a Target Investigation of the site. Using the GPS data, Brimstone’s explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) engineering team were able to unearth the suspicious targets.

The result, a pair of RAF 1000lb bombs at depths of 5m and 5.7m. The casings confirmed that they dated from the first half of the 20th Century. These large items of UXO potentially posed a very severe high explosive hazard. However, on closer inspection, Brimstone’s founder, Aaron Florence, was able to identify the bombs as inert, concrete-filled training weapons.

The swift identification of the UXOs meant there was no need for an MOD callout. Consequently, the project did not encounter significant delay.
