A “bomb” discovered on a North Wales beach is set to be destroyed in a controlled explosion this morning.

North Wales Police has closed a section of Porth Neigwl (Hell’s Mouth) near Abersoch with a 100m cordon in place after the device was found by a dog walker at around 4pm on Sunday.

The bomb squad attended the scene and coastguard and police officers will remain in the area until the Ministry of Defence “dispose” of the item. Members of the public are being urged to avoid the area.

Where was the device found?

The device was found on the water’s edge by Nigel Matthews from Abersoch. He told the Daily Post “I was walking along the beach with my wife and our three dogs and I saw something at the water’s edge. I went over to it and said to myself ‘that’s a bomb’ and I called the police.

“I moved it from the water because I didn’t want to leave it in case it floated off again. The sea was pretty rough and at 3.30pm it was just an hour after high water. I took it higher up the beach and took some photos of it which I sent to the police.”

He said markings on the object, which is about 14 inches long, were in French.
