Authorities in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, are planning to evacuate up to 60,000 residents from their homes so experts can safely defuse and dispose of an unexploded WWII bomb.

The evacuation in the Kordelio neighbourhood of Thessaloniki is set for Sunday 12th February.

Residents living 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) around the area of the bomb site will be asked to stay away from the area for up to five hours, according to officials handling the evacuation order.

The bomb, which is estimated to weigh over 250 pounds, was found over 16 feet deep near the central railway station in western Thessaloniki during work to expand a gas station’s underground tanks.
